چکیده

1 Cardiac catheterization has transformed the management of pediatric cardiac disease, as the indications for pediatric catheterization are broad and far-reaching.1–3 Cardiac catheterization, however, is not without risk. In pediatric patients, the rate of complications ranges from 7.8% to 16.2%.1,5–9 The most common complication is vascular injury, which accounts for nearly one third of all complications.1,7 We report the surgical treatment of a 31-day-old infant with an injury to the left common iliac artery (CIA) leading to significant retroperitoneal hemorrhage (RPH) that occurred during a diagnostic cardiac catheterization.

Delayed Diagnosis of Iatrogenic Bladder Perforation in a Neonate

Iatrogenic bladder injuries have been reported in the neonate during umbilical artery/vein catheterization, voiding cystourethrogram, urinary catheterizations, and overwhelming hypoxic conditions. Patients with iatrogenic bladder perforations can present with acute abdomen indicating urinary peritonitis, septic-uremic shock, or subtle symptoms like abdominal distension, pain, hematuria, uremia,...

Iatrogenic Claudication from a Vascular Closure Device after Cardiac Catheterization

We report a case of iatrogenic claudication as a result of a misplaced percutaneous arterial closure device (PACD) used to obtain hemostasis after cardiac catheterization. The patient presented one week after his procedure with complaints suggestive of right lower extremity claudication. Computed tomographic angiography demonstrated a near total occlusion of the right common femoral artery from...

Life-threatening Rupture of a Femoral Pseudoaneurysm after Cardiac Catheterization

A pseudoaneurysm refers to a defect in the arterial wall, allowing communication of arterial blood with the adjacent extra-luminal space. Pseudoaneurysms result from traumatic arterial injury. With the increasing utilization of percutaneous arterial interventions, iatrogenic arterial injury has become the predominant cause of pseudoaneurysm formation. Rupture of the pseudoaneurysm comprises a v...

Preventing Traumatic Urinary Catheter Insertion Through a Computerized Ordering System: Quasi-experimental Study From a Tertiary Academic Center

Background: Iatrogenic urethral injury is a well-known risk of urinary catheter insertion. Associated morbidities include stricture formation, catheter associated infection, risk for instrumentation, and extended length of stay. Yet, insufficient attention is paid to its prevention. Objective: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a computerized...

The efficacy of ultrasound-guided compression of iatrogenic femoral pseudo-aneurysms.

OBJECTIVE to evaluate ultrasound guided compression (UGC) for the treatment of iatrogenic femoral pseudoaneurysms (PA). DESIGN retrospective follow-up of 130 patients with suspected PA referred from the cardiac catheterisation laboratory over a 36-month period. RESULTS the overall incidence of PA was 0.5% and was significantly higher after therapeutic (1.5%) than diagnostic (0.3%) procedure...
